The theme of this edition, ‘NONVIOLENCE: FROM ME TO US,’ resonates around the world

As published in the rules for participation in the 8th International Film Festival of Active Nonviolence 2026, FICNOVA, on 1 August 2025 we closed the registration period for films competing in this edition.

A total of 2,565 films were submitted across the four categories: 99 medium-length films and 340 feature films in the 2023 General Section for Short Films, and 103 short films in the Educational Institutions section.

The films came to us from 121 countries, through the three festival platforms we use at FICNOVA (FilmFreeway, Festhome and Clickforfestival), thanks to which the proposal circulates across all continents.

The international organising team, bearing in mind that our work is entirely voluntary, despite being more demanding with the requirements for this edition so that the films comply with the theme proposed by the festival and with the requirement that the original languages offer the possibility of subtitles in Spanish and English, we see that we maintain a very high participation of works to be evaluated. For all these reasons, we are organising the festival on a biennial basis in 2026 and will not have the official selection for the competition until 15 July 2026, when we will publish the accepted works.

We would like to thank all the authors and producers for their participation in the 8th FICNOVA 2026, helping to spread the message of non-violence with their examples.

Awarded Films in the 7th FICNOVA 2024

Today, 2 October, amidst the noise of the bombs that continue to widen the disaster of violence between governments and destroy peoples, we send out a signal of NONVIOLENCE. A signal that can reach the hearts of simple people and help to create an outcry against barbarism.

These are the films AWARDED by the international selection team of the 7th International Film Festival of Active Nonviolence 2024, awarding them the “Stelae” of this edition, in its five different sections.

The international organising team, from different cities and countries, following the criteria from a humanist approach of rescuing the best examples that fit the theme of the festival: “nonviolence transforming the world”, have made the following selection of award-winning films in its five competition sections (Short, Medium and Feature Films in the General Section and Short Films in the Primary and Secondary Schools and Higher Education Centres Section).

Our most sincere thanks to all the participants of the 2724 films registered from 126 countries and to the 921 films admitted as official selection in competition. It was very difficult to make such a small selection of finalists.

We recognise in this edition 5 films awarded with the “Stela” of FICNOVA, among the 41 finalist films from 13 countries as some good examples of the strength of nonviolence that is growing and transforming the world.

In this documentary we give voice to the Guinean LGTBI activists Án-gel and Gonzalo, who give testimony of the persecution suffered by women and LGTBI people in their country and the difficulty of “coming out of the closet” as it is a taboo within families. A violation of human rights by the country’s current regime, with police abuse, torture, discrimination, sexual violence, forced pregnancies, child sexual exploitation of minors and a high mortality rate.

A JOURNEY TO OURSELVES

Spanish comedian Pepe Viyuela guides us on a journey where past and present merge as one: a time and circumstances shared by the victims of each armed conflict. Un viaje hacia nosotros narrates a journey that begins with the family memory of actor Pepe Viyuela, as he undertakes an investigation following the trail of his grandfather Gervasio, a member of the Republican army during the Spanish Civil War. A journey that takes him back to his past, and a new perspective from which to re-evaluate his relationship with the present.

Bringing us closer to the reality of refugees, showing the essential need to protect the life of every human being in the face of a threat. But at the same time it points to a hopeful global future that is beginning to be expressed among the youngest.

How to use the NOVIOLENCIA FICNOVA Video Library

In addition to the week of the festival, we can continue to see the participating productions throughout the year.

Many of the Festival’s award-winning films have already been authorised by their authors for free public screening in social, cultural and educational centres, etc., always in collaboration with the Festival’s venues. Thus, these examples of nonviolence at the present time can illustrate video forums, workshops, conferences, etc., to deepen the nonviolent experience. In no case can they be screened for financial gain, or in a way that is alien to the objectives of the festival to develop the culture of nonviolence.

We encourage associations, cultural or educational centres and any meeting place to create these regular meeting spaces, illustrated by the FICNOVA video library of nonviolence.

Seven editions of FICNOVA since eleven years ago

The International Film Festival of Active Nonviolence (FICNOVA) is a polycentric festival, organized through volunteer work, held simultaneously in different cities and countries to help raise global awareness of NV, awarding the best examples among the selected finalists.

From the first edition in 2013 in which 24 films from 4 countries participated, to the seventh edition that we have celebrated in 2024 in which 2,724 works from 93 countries participated, we see how carefully sustained work allows us to expand our signal.

It has a general section for short, medium and long films and a special section for schools, trying to gather all the initiatives from professional cinema to the youngest ones.

Images are a mobilizing force capable of transforming our lives.

We are accustomed to the misnamed “action cinema” in which only violence in its various forms is shown. This constant bombardment of aggressive relationship models creates a distorted awareness of reality, conditioning our way of seeing and feeling the world.

From FICNOVA we want to make visible real examples of how any conflict can be resolved through non-violent means.

These examples not only serve to show the best of human beings; they also serve to transform suffering situations.

We want to spread the need for nonviolence and we believe that one of the most powerful tools to do so is film.

The international jury, composed of nonviolence activists in different cities in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Spain and Mexico, has recognised 41 films from 20 countries in five categories as finalists for this year’s awards:

The Atrato is Life

“El Atrato es la vida” is a short documentary that tells the story of how the armed conflict impacted the Atrato River and how the Atrato people, faced with a destructive bloc of armed actors and extractive economies, resisted in order to preserve their way of life. Produced by the Foro Interétnico Solidaridad Chocó y Siembra, the documentary shows how the logic of war has mutated over time, moving from periods of intense disputes to periods of economic pragmatism, leaving enormous socio-environmental impacts in its wake. All of this led to the erosion of the ethnic communities’ own systems of territorial administration, altering their economic, productive, cultural and governmental logics.

The truth in the blood

Carried within the framework of the commemoration of 24 March, National Day of Memory for Truth and Justice, it narrates the heroic journey and the scientific revolution carried out and promoted by the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo that resulted in the discovery of the grandparents’ index – a factor from which the daughters and sons of those who disappeared during the last civil-military dictatorship are identified – and in the creation of the National Bank of Genetic Data as the first institution in the world to carry out this specific type of filiation analysis.

In Argentina, despite the importance of agricultural activity and the fact that it is a leading country in the use of pesticides, there are no official epidemiological surveys on their impact on populations. Nor are regulations on their presence in drinking water updated. There are no official data on the quantities used or uniform provisions for spraying distances. On the contrary, the populations are obliged to provide proof of the causal link between their health damage and exposure to these substances, which is called the reversal of the burden of proof. This leads to every community going down the same long and costly legal path.

In 1993, thousands of Guatemalan refugees returned from Mexico. They fled armed conflict and genocide against the indigenous Mayan population. Today, ‘Los Regresados’ are defending their agricultural land and territory in the jungle of Alta Verapaz against the construction of a hydroelectric dam. They draw on their past experiences to mobilise new generations.
Los Retornados’ is a film by Tessa Boeykens and Pieter De Vos, in collaboration with the Copal AA La Esperanza community.

No one is far away

Poverty or homelessness is not a characteristic of anyone, but a situation that can be brought about by many factors. There are many new forms of poverty, ranging from university students to people who have jobs but do not earn enough to afford housing or parents who suddenly find themselves unemployed. No one is safe from poverty or homelessness. All it takes is a series of adverse circumstances.
The documentary Nadie está lejos (No One is Far Away) is the experience of a group of people living in poverty, homelessness or economic vulnerability and, in particular, users of the PARIS 365 soup kitchen in Iruña, who participate with the company Ados Teatroa in the creative process of the show Aporofobia STOP.

Who Am I

She changed her name for the better by fitting in with our country, but that is not the hardest thing she has done since she had to leave Nigeria when she was only 10 years old. Like her, Marouane and Youssef had to leave Morocco and everything they knew to escape extreme poverty when they were still minors.
Until that journey, the stories of the three young people had little in common. When they arrived in Spain, however, they found themselves part of the same group: Unaccompanied Foreign Minors (MENA).
El Qui soc explores the reality behind an acronym that the media has turned into a label linked to criminal acts, marginalisation and criminality.

Unite for Bissau

In the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau, this thought-provoking film takes you on a journey that follows courageous local women who challenge patriarchy by building institutions that promote self-sufficiency through agro-ecology. They also challenge social norms by opposing female genital mutilation and rejecting forced marriage. Overtaking the legacy of Amilcar Cabral, the Bissau-Guinean independence leader who placed women’s rights at the centre of the liberation struggle, women of a rising generation are taking back their power.

Cirerers. Images of a construction

The process of a cooperative housing community in Barcelona, the construction of a building and also of a community. A struggle for decent housing against urban extractivism and for human rights linked to habitat.
In 2016, Barcelona City Council allocated plots of land for cooperative housing projects. One of these plots is awarded in the transfer of use to Sostre Civic, 27 subsidised housing units in the Roquetes neighbourhood. The Cirerers driving group was constituted in September 2017. The documentary is the record of the experience.

Inclusive education. To want it is to create it

Building inclusive societies requires revising school systems, in which part of the student body does not fit in, is mistreated and segregated, while the rest learn to see discrimination as something correct and desirable.
Based on the story of Rubén Calleja, who was expelled from his primary school and forced to attend a special education centre, the documentary weaves together lives and struggles. After years of legal battle, Rubén obtains the backing of the UN against the Spanish state. But there are other gains to be made in transforming discriminatory school cultures, policies and practices. Inclusive education is a personal and collective task that enables the participation of all people in the world.

Until the Sun Goes Out

“Hasta que se apagague el sol” invites us into the stories of those who have defied the clutches of violence by demonstrating that the human spirit can prevail, leaving a legacy of hope in the midst of the deepest darkness. The stories unfold in the simultaneity of the opposite: life born out of death, and death as a result of devotion to death.
o result of devotion to peace and justice. It is the story of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Luz Marina, a mother fighting for justice in the extrajudicial execution of her son, and that of Albeiro, an indigenous leader from south-western Colombia. Mankewenüy / Friend of the Condor

On discovering the existence of a lonko (chief) called Mankewenüy (friend of the condor) who lived on the banks of the Nahuel Huapi in 1790, Anahí decides to make a journey through the Andes and retrace the paths taken by her ancestors. As a ñampulkafe and ülkantufe (traveller and singer) Anahí goes in search of sounds and stories that allow her to create songs that contain the newen of the manke (natural force of the condor).
During this journey she meets poets, singers, instrument makers, machis (spiritual leaders); to let us hear in them volcanoes that speak, mountains that sound and rivers that sing.

Mare Mediterraneum

Through a choral documentary, several sub-Saharan migrants recall the odyssey of a journey full of dangers, where women are forced to pay not only with money, but also with their bodies. On the other hand, in Senegal, the mothers and families of migrants are still hoping for news of their loved ones. Meanwhile, on one side of the Mediterranean as on the other, initiatives are emerging that promote encounters between diverse people and seek to create well-being for the human community.

The Dawsonians

During the first days after the 1973 coup d’état, the political leadership of the Popular Unity government was arrested and taken to Dawson Island, the Magallanes region, at the southern tip of Chile and the mainland. The wives of the then political prisoners began a relentless effort to find out the whereabouts of their husbands and then try to return them alive. In these circumstances, they spontaneously got together and organised themselves into what they called the “Dawsonianas” group.

Tenderness the call of the Ñuke Mapu

The story begins with volunteer work carried out in the winter of 1999 in the Mapuche community Choin Lafkenche in the southern part of Chile. Here we met Julio Huentekura Llancaleo, a young Mapuche from Santiago de Chile, and together we travelled through different communities of Malleko recording the voices of the moment. After 20 years we returned to Chile after the Social Outbreak and the COVID 19 pandemic to learn more about Julio who was treacherously murdered in a capital city prison. We travelled through the Wallmapu meeting and sharing with new Mapuche communities their struggle and their current demands in the process of territorial recovery.

Sarura. The future is an unknown place

At the gates of the Negev desert, a group of young Palestinians fight against the Israeli military occupation. “Youth of Sumud – the youth of steadfast perseverance – seek to return to their people the land that was taken away from their families by restructuring the ancient cave village of Sarura.
They meet aggression with non-violent action, fending off rifles with their video cameras; they oppose desolation and death with hope and life.
Ten years after their first documentary about the non-violent struggle in the West Bank, the filmmakers return to the village of At-Tuwani and, using archival footage from over 15 years, tell how the children have grown up.

The international organising team of the International Film Festival of Active Nonviolence (FICNOVA), in accordance with the festival’s rules and regulations, announces today 15th July 2024 the Official Competition Selection for its Seventh Edition 2024

Once again, thousands of filmmakers and collectives have turned their attention to this festival themed around nonviolence, presenting a multitude of films with their diverse proposals, from different cultures.

Of the 2,724 works received from 126 countries, 921 films from 93 countries will be officially selected for competition.

The list of the 921 selected films can be viewed from this link.

All the films are admitted as they recognise significant elements of active nonviolence, such as the denunciation of some form of violence (physical, economic, racial, sexual, religious, psychological or moral) or discrimination.

But in many of them we can see a greater impulse than a simple denunciation, an effort to overcome the pain and suffering of people, looking for the roots of conflicts and proposing ways out to transfer and solve situations.

The films selected as finalists in each category will be announced on 2 September.

Until then, we urge you not to lose sight of this sign of nonviolence, which connects with the best aspirations of human beings.

FICNOVA closes the deadline for film submissions for the 7th edition 2024

Today, August 6, 2023, we close the deadline for entries for the 7th edition of the International Film Festival of Active Nonviolence (FICNOVA).

78 years after the U.S. Army dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima (Japan) on August 6, 1945 killing 166,000 people and, on August 8, a second bomb on Nagasaki killing another 80,000 people, as a significant gesture of remembrance of this atrocity, we want to highlight the desolate disaster produced by wars and the need to awaken in hearts more strongly than ever the nonviolence capable of overcoming them.

If the violence of wars continues to live in the heads of “powerful insensitive lords” anchored in prehistory, from this festival we recognize that in spite of everything nonviolence is present in the hearts and heads of millions of people around the world. We hope to make this evident with the films we have received (more than two thousand seven hundred) from 124 countries.

We are now beginning the selection period for the films admitted to the competition, which we will announce on July 15, 2024.

Spaces for nonviolence FICNOVA Madrid

FICNOVA Madrid is programming two cycles of active nonviolence screenings to help “dismantle forms of violence” in a personal and social way.

We began the year with the opening of two spaces for nonviolence in two localities in the outskirts of Madrid, thanks to the help of the Municipal Libraries C. Cisneros in Alcalá de Henares and Ricardo León in Galapagar and the Centro Social Autogestionado ÍTACA, also in the latter municipality.

In Alcalá de Henares the meetings are held fortnightly. The participants have been able to benefit from the diversity of approaches contributed by each film and gain in new awareness through the rich exchanges of experience.

In Galapagar, after a first presentation of the festival in the municipal library, the meetings are scheduled on a monthly basis in the space offered by the CSA ÍTACA. The exchanges are also extremely enriching for all the participants and the next meeting is eagerly awaited.

From this atmosphere of mutual recognition and warm affection, we believe that we are sharing a useful tool that can help us gain freedom and open up new possibilities.

Organisers from FICNOVA Santiago held a screening and a discussion with teachers and students from the Liceo de Aplicación.

On Tuesday 25 April FICNOVA returned to the classroom, opening a space for reflection and the exchange of experiences, after the screening of the short film “Monkey Business”, official selection of the 6th FICNOVA 2022.

“We watched a short film and talked about active nonviolence. The young people are extraordinary! Professor Roberto Rojas is a great example of dedication, enthusiasm and love for the students. We are very grateful to him for opening the doors of the school to make a small contribution”. – the protagonists tell us.

We are sure that the experience will be repeated soon with new examples. Until then!

Pride, in the name of love

With music we transform the world: Pride, in the name of love

Between February and April 2023 friends, collaborators and family members participated in this musical project, with the aim of disseminating and presenting the seventh FICNOVA, an initiative that is celebrated around October 2nd every two years, commemorating the International Day of Nonviolence declared by the United Nations.
On this occasion, collaborators from Madrid, Spain, and Montevideo, Uruguay, came together to transmit our feelings and to make our participation known through our interpretation of a musical theme that inspires us. We also counted on the collaboration of people from different parts of the world for the elaboration of this audiovisual. Quite a challenge in terms of time and distance.

We chose this song by the band U2 “Pride, in the name of love”.

This song is about a transcendental event in the history of humanity: the assassination of Martin Luther King, a historical figure who dedicated his life to the peaceful struggle for the rights of African-Americans, at a very difficult time for this population, which was struggling at that time between slavery and freedom. This struggle didn´t end, as the song says on 4 April 1968, when “a shot rings out in the Memphis sky, free at last, they took your life, they could not take your pride“.

Through nonviolence we transform the world

This phrase, which with the help of several participants we translated into several languages, is intrinsically linked to this episode, which like so many others throughout history, represents the pride of trying to be better every day, from ourselves and towards the world around us. Always working in the name of love, creating links, to bring us closer together and get this message across, in all possible manifestations of human language, but also from our actions, as beings who proudly share this world, in the name of love, working from nonviolence, transforming the world.

FICNOVA launches the Seventh 2024 edition of the International Film Festival of Active Nonviolence

The international organising team of FICNOVA agreed to launch the next edition with a reference message: “Active nonviolence transforming the world”.

Active nonviolence is moving forward transforming the world and from this small festival of inspiration in New Humanism we want to rescue examples that confirm this all over the world. Despite the current critical moment, in which the “powerful”, disconnected from the pain and suffering of others, continue to promote wars and threats, even nuclear, in order to continue imposing their model of supremacy of a few over others, something is awakening in the hearts of many people.
A new nonviolent sensibility is growing and settling in, displacing the old world without trauma as soon as we realise that we are not numbers, nor little ants, nor mere consumers, and that within the humblest human being there is something great that needs to unfold.
We open the registration period for films for four months, using two significant dates for FICNOVA. We start the admission of works on 4 May (the day of the first public exhibition of New Humanism by Silo) and close it on 6 August 2023 (the day the first nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima).
A deadline of only four months to limit the amount of participating films, since the festival is made by voluntary work and if the participation continues to increase as in the previous edition (with almost 3000 films received), we could not do the task of selection in a responsible way.
We would like to make a special appeal to the authors, so that all the participating films stick to the theme of the festival and that they are presented in their original languages, but with obligatory subtitles in the two official languages of the festival: Spanish and English.
We hope that this new edition will serve as an encouragement, inspiration and invitation to communication and exchange between all of us who feel humanist.
