Synopsis

Hahatay, Gandiol´s Smiles’ is a non-profit association that works in development cooperation between Senegal and Spain.
From Hahatay they work every day to develop educational, health and cultural spaces that provide the necessary opportunities for everyone in Gandiol to have the ability to make decisions about their lives. Hahatay provides the tools to build the future of the community with their own resources.
In September 2019 I visited the NGO and this report came out of that experience where it is the community members who tell us about the aims and achievements of a project that is as essential as it is exciting.

“Solidarity crime. The Borders of Democracy” is a documentary that raises awareness of the systematic policies of human rights violations against migrants and all those who have been in solidarity with them. The documentary presents their stories through interviews with migrants (at the borders of 14 cities and in 5 European countries), and with those who have been sanctioned and continue to suffer judicial persecution for facilitating – without any material benefit – the entry, transit or stay of migrants in an irregular situation. First it was the migrants, then the people in solidarity, who will be next?”

FICNOVA recognises the film’s effort to show how, in a world divided by borders, where goods have freedom of movement but people do not, the friendship of two children is stronger than the conditions imposed by governments.

It shows how Europe’s discriminatory economic system towards Africa is shaken by the simple strength of the true feelings of friendship of the youngest children who do not encounter barriers. A European child can cross the border hidden in a lorry “without problems” because of the unthinkable fate in fiction, but tragically we know the reverse discrimination suffered by thousands of people today.

A recognition of the real things that we need to strengthen in ourselves at the present time in the face of the madness of the barriers that separate human beings.

The testimonies provided will move us and hopefully help us to move social structures.

The war in Syria is once again at FIICNOVA, and this example is intended to help to keep in mind all the millions of people who have suffered and continue to suffer from this barbarity.

Tariq rescues the possibility of a nonviolent response to any situation. His mother lives in fear that her son will succumb to the spiral of violence. But he, after a short silence, will respond in an unexpected way.

FICNOVA chose this film because it shows us the story of a woman who fought against discrimination and for women’s rights and the subsequent violence of the military dictatorship in Argentina of which she was also a victim.
The responses presented here are all non-violent actions that involve a large group of people in a society, who fight to prevent the repetition of these actions that threaten human rights and human life. And all of this is shown through the eyes and graphics of a young girl, which gives it the fresh, spontaneous sensitivity of the new generations, leaving us with a light-hearted feeling of an open and more humane future.

In recent years, in parallel to the securing of borders, the number of people who lose their lives trying to enter Europe has increased. These deaths are often reported when their bodies are washed up on Spanish beaches. In most cases, the protocol followed with these individuals is to register them, in the nearest cemetery, with the identifier of Young, Male, Black Race.
