Juana Ruiz, an activist from Madrid, was imprisoned by Israel between 2021 and 2022. Her story had a huge impact in Spain, where funds were raised and dozens of demonstrations were organised to secure her release. What did this mean? How did she manage to be released?
“International impunity hurts me,” Ruiz reflects in the documentary. “The Spanish government supported me, but they even told me they wouldn’t sever diplomatic relations on my account.”
We now know that her case was not the only one. In recent years, Israel has outlawed and persecuted the main social and aid movements in Palestine.
A team of Catalan documentary-makers travelled to the region to gather previously unseen archive material and personal recordings, and to film in the West Bank just before the conflict escalated.
*Espacio menguante* examines the role of the United States and Europe, as well as the arbitrary imprisonment of Palestinian children.
The documentary combines analysis with an intimate portrait of Palestinian activists, who honestly share their doubts and contradictions with us… and help us to better understand one of the most significant conflicts of this century.
