Seven editions of FICNOVA since eleven years ago

The International Film Festival of Active Nonviolence (FICNOVA) is a polycentric festival, organized through volunteer work, held simultaneously in different cities and countries to help raise global awareness of NV, awarding the best examples among the selected finalists.

From the first edition in 2013 in which 24 films from 4 countries participated, to the seventh edition that we have celebrated in 2024 in which 2,724 works from 93 countries participated, we see how carefully sustained work allows us to expand our signal.

It has a general section for short, medium and long films and a special section for schools, trying to gather all the initiatives from professional cinema to the youngest ones.

Images are a mobilizing force capable of transforming our lives.

We are accustomed to the misnamed “action cinema” in which only violence in its various forms is shown. This constant bombardment of aggressive relationship models creates a distorted awareness of reality, conditioning our way of seeing and feeling the world.

From FICNOVA we want to make visible real examples of how any conflict can be resolved through non-violent means.

These examples not only serve to show the best of human beings; they also serve to transform suffering situations.

We want to spread the need for nonviolence and we believe that one of the most powerful tools to do so is film.

How to use the NOVIOLENCIA FICNOVA Video Library

In addition to the week of the festival, we can continue to see the participating productions throughout the year.

Many of the Festival’s award-winning films have already been authorised by their authors for free public screening in social, cultural and educational centres, etc., always in collaboration with the Festival’s venues. Thus, these examples of nonviolence at the present time can illustrate video forums, workshops, conferences, etc., to deepen the nonviolent experience. In no case can they be screened for financial gain, or in a way that is alien to the objectives of the festival to develop the culture of nonviolence.

We encourage associations, cultural or educational centres and any meeting place to create these regular meeting spaces, illustrated by the FICNOVA video library of nonviolence.

REGISTRATION PERIOD:
From 4 MAY to 6 AUGUST 2023.

INDISPENSABLE:

1. THEME.
Only works that meet the objective of the festival will be accepted: To fight, through nonviolence, against human suffering, violence or discrimination.

2. LANGUAGES.
Works in any original language will be accepted, but with subtitles in the two official languages: SPANISH and ENGLISH. Works that do not provide them by the closing date will be rejected.

Ongoing activities FICNOVA

After the week of the festival last October, local activities continue with screenings and exchanges on the examples of nonviolence provided by the films of the 6th FICNOVA 2022.

From different cultural spaces provided for the occasion, screenings, film forums and workshops are currently being held with different frequency, fortnightly or monthly, in cities such as Santiago de Chile, Vigo, Alcalá de Henares and Galapagar in Madrid, Spain.

In a warm and close way we can exchange horizontally on the topics provided by the films.

We hope that these spaces of nonviolence will multiply soon in new cities.

Any person, collective or educational center interested in creating this type of space can do it with our help. You will find all the information on how to do it in this link.

We are also already working on the organization of the 7th FICNOVA 2024, which we will communicate soon.

We are also dedicating in this time a great effort to update our website, incorporating many new features that you will be able to see little by little. We hope to make it a useful tool for all people who want to deepen the experience and the meaning of nonviolence in the present time.

Synopsis:

The return to the countryside is a documentary that makes social collectives visible and accompanies those who day by day face the injustices of neoliberal economic policies, the distancing and advance of the agricultural frontier, proposing a concrete perspective of food production aimed at providing healthy food to cities and population centres, without the use of pesticides. Agrarian Reform and Food Sovereignty are concepts that are embodied in this work with the aim of bringing the public closer to and generating empathy with the process of land redistribution in order to create a more economically just world that is ecologically sustainable over time.

6th FICNOVA 2022 Awards Ceremony

FICNOVA international meeting

On Saturday 1st October, the Active Nonviolence International Film Festival presented the “Estelas“, the awards of its 6th Edition 2022, in a virtual gala by Zoom with the help of the UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distacia) who from Madrid facilitated the live connection so that participants from all over the world could meet. In this way we were able to meet directors and filmmakers from America, Africa and Europe. In addition, the event was streamed on the UNED Channel.

The meeting was coordinated from the festival’s host cities in: Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Mexico City, Puyo in Ecuador, Santiago de Chile, and Vigo and Madrid in Spain.

After the welcome to all attendees by Pepa Benítez, and the projection of the Videospot of the 6th edition, we started the event with the presentation made by Sila Améstica from Santiago de Chile explaining who we were organising the festival. “We are all volunteers, we are inspired by the New Universalist Humanism, a movement initiated by Silo, Latin American thinker and spiritual guide ….” “and in synthesis we are people who have dedicated our whole lives to changing the world”.

There was a short reflection on the meaning of nonviolence and why do we act in this way? Why do we do the festival? Pablo Martínez from Madrid explained some motivations from an experiential point of view.

After this brief introduction, the finalist and award-winning films were presented.

At the event, the 20 finalist films were presented and the awards of the four sections of the festival were announced: Educational Centres and Short Films, Medium-length Films and Feature Films of the General Section.

Awards were presented to the films: “Humanize” in the Educational Institutions Section, “Dos Ríos – Cacao y Libertad” in the Short Film Section, “Solidarity Crime, the borders of democracy” in the Medium-length Film Section and “La vuelta al campo” in the Feature Films Section.

We announce that although we will initially focus on the screening of the award-winning and finalist films, we hope to be able to reach agreements with all the authors of the “Official Competition Selection” who wish to do so, so that their works can be accessible from the FICNOVA website, or to be screened at events organised by FICNOVA to promote non-violence, free of charge.

We will soon publish the calendar of programmed activities, to invite all those interested to participate in the events.

SPACES FOR NONVIOLENCE

Violence is learnt, non-violence too

During the week of the festival, FICNOVA and the humanist organisations participating in the different venues held all kinds of activities to disseminate the samples of nonviolent action received that year all over the world. Images that act as a demonstration effect of the process of change that human beings are going through internally, opening new paths with active nonviolence in the face of the different forms of violence: physical, economic, religious, sexual, racial, psychological and moral.

Each host city prepares its own parallel activities and/or participates in jointly coordinated activities, according to the possibilities of the venue.

But it’s not all over after that week of festival activity. Throughout the year, in different FICNOVA venues, we continue to promote the opening of spaces for nonviolence, from our local action possibilities, organising film forums with films from the FICNOVA VIDEO LIBRARY authorised by their authors, together with workshops to exchange the daily experience of nonviolence that we can all rescue. In this joint and horizontal way, we propose to advance personally and socially, developing the principle of treating others as we like to be treated.

We encourage any collective, cultural space or educational centre to create these spaces.

Festival awards

FICNOVA presents “Estelas” as the festival’s award. A statuette cast in bronze and copper of special significance, created by the artist Daniel Zimmermann.

The festival does not have a financial prize. Occasionally, collaborating entities may offer grants or teaching or film material, as a result of collaboration agreements.

NAME OF THE AWARD:

FICNOVA named its award statuette “ESTELA” in memory of “Estela Rodríguez Ghiara“, a humanist who participated in the organisation of the festival and who left her mark through her coherent and supportive action.

We would have liked to have been able to give awards to all those who are able to create a nonviolent production and share it at FICNOVA, but we do not have the resources to do so.

Instead, we did give a diploma to all the finalists as a token of recognition and gratitude.

HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

An award resulting from the Ideas Competition for the creation of the festival’s identification statuette.

In order to create the statuette for the festival awards, we organised an ideas competition, in which several artists from different countries participated. To all of them we send our sincere thanks.

Based on the preferences expressed by the FICNOVA organising teams in the different cities that took part, the work of the Argentinean artist Daniel Zimmermann was chosen as the festival’s statuette.

MEANING OF THE STATUETTE

We want to spread the culture of nonviolence by highlighting the significant achievements of peoples in this other direction, which is why from the very beginning we decided that the awards of each edition should be associated with the “places” that have opened new paths in the direction of nonviolence.

In this sense, we proposed to build the awards of the Film Festival, with a special symbolic gesture: to create the statuettes or commemorative sculptures cast in bronze and copper together with a pinch of a bullet, never fired, of the nations that signify the non-violent direction, to which we ask for their help. An allegory for the transformation and convergence of peoples in the direction of non-violence.

The replication process takes place every year, with the help of enthusiastic friends.

A FESTIVAL IN WHICH EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE

The festival is divided into two sections in order to facilitate the participation of any person or group that wishes to make a contribution: a General Section with categories for filmmakers and amateurs, and a special Section for Educational Institutions.

The festival serves to bring together the work of professionals and amateurs, recognising not only the quality of the images but also the example of overcoming violence and discrimination, opening new paths with non-violence.

GENERAL SECTION

A. Feature Films. From 60 min.

B. Medium-length films. From 31 to 59 min.

C. Short films. Up to 30 min.

RULES FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE GENERAL SECTION

We focus on the transformative power of the message conveyed in each film, rather than on artistic quality, when awarding the festival’s prizes. We therefore invite no one to self-censure their production for the means by which it was made, but to note whether they really share a transformative nonviolent action.

Nonviolence advances towards its maximum dimension by ensuring that nothing is above the human being and no human being is above another.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS SECTION

D. Short films. Up to 30 min.

RULES FOR PARTICIPATION IN EDUCATION CENTRES

There are no age barriers to participation. We encourage the creation of the youngest with the help of schools, for which we dedicate a special section to collect works that come out of the classroom. In this sense, we call on the responsibility of teachers to consider whether or not it is necessary to advance in education in active non-violence.

Helping to find horizontality in the classroom will be a task for teachers, but also a challenge for students.

Ways of collaboration with the festival

All forms of collaboration will always be on a voluntary, unpaid basis.

ANYONE COMMITTED TO NON-VIOLENCE who wants to help develop the festival, can collaborate in the organisation from the local venues.

NEW VENUES. We can also help you to create a new branch in your city. From the nearest branch we can help you to create a new branch, trying to level the experience and the necessary humanistic context, in order to be able to work in a coordinated way.

INSTITUTIONS, ASSOCIATIONS AND COLLECTIVES. We can reach collaboration agreements to carry out video forums, workshops, study groups… with any institution, association or collective that wants to help spread the culture of active non-violence, recognising them as collaborating entities.

EDUCATIONAL SCHOOLS: In addition to encouraging teachers and students to submit short films and micro-short films in their section, we also invite them to study and exchange on non-violence in the classroom, to hold video forums and workshops, including presentations of the festival if they are in contact with a local organising team.

TRANSLATORS AND SUBTITULATORS – We need to translate and subtitle some non-professional productions into the two official languages of the event (English and Spanish) so that they can be seen in all the venues in the different countries.

ARTISTS – If you feel that your art is related to the festival and you want to add to it by showing it as a parallel activity, get in touch to see how it can be done.

FILM AND ART SCHOOLS. They can help by encouraging the participation of their students and by organising presentations in collaboration with local organising teams.

CINEMAS. We encourage the programme managers of cinemas and theatres to give peace a chance and to reserve more and more space for the cinema of active nonviolence. They can become permanent screening venues for the festival whenever they wish, or organise a thematic cycle.

SPACES FOR NON-VIOLENCE

We propose the opening of spaces for reflection and exchange of experience, which will help to strengthen us internally by finding the meaning of nonviolence in our actions. We encourage associations, cultural or educational centres and any meeting place to create these spaces of nonviolence for regular meetings, illustrated by FICNOVA’s video library of nonviolence.

FICNOVA – ANIFF: A humanist space of encounter in the culture of non-violence

Sharing the experience of nonviolence

From the repudiation of any form of violence (physical, economic, racial, sexual, religious, psychological and moral), we share this common space for the exchange of experiences of nonviolence in the world, supporting each other to strengthen this transforming attitude.

A small friendly haven from which we can unveil, in a practical way, the meaning of nonviolence in our actions, which helps us to build bridges between human beings.

A proposal to make visible the space without war and without violence that we are finding in ourselves and that we make possible in the world.

BRIEF HISTORY

The festival was initially organised from a few grassroots teams of World without Wars and without Violence. But as the project became known, many friends in other organisations and fronts, who share New Humanism and nonviolence, joined in to create new spaces, or venues in different cities around the world.

The promoting team in Madrid, in agreement with the rest of the organisers in other cities, formed the non-profit humanist association FICNOVA in Spain, focused on the organisation of the festival and the dissemination of the culture of nonviolence all over the world. Today the festival works in collaboration with all of them.

DATES OF CELEBRATION

The competition is held during the week of 2 October every two years, coinciding with the International Day of Nonviolence, declared by the United Nations, commemorating the birth of Gandhi. But every year, during that week, this meeting place is still open and all kinds of activities are organised.

In each edition, new participants can be added and new venues can be created.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

FICNOVA presents “Stelae” as festival awards. A statuette cast in bronze and copper of special significance, replicas of the one created by the artist Daniel Zimmermann for the festival.
It also awards diplomas of recognition to all the finalists of each edition.

A POLYCENTRIC AND DECENTRALISED FESTIVAL

FICNOVA is designed to be held simultaneously in all the cities and countries that wish to participate. The definitive list of host cities for each year will be finalised a few months before the event is held, in order to establish coordination between all of them.

SELF-MANAGED

FICNOVA is driven by the voluntary work of its organisers. The material needs for its celebration are solved, in each place, with contributions distributed among its collaborators, with the donation of materials and with the cession of spaces for the celebration of the festival.

It is aimed at both professionals and amateurs, individuals and groups or associations, with no age limit for participants. The interest is to recognise in ourselves the possibilities that we open up through nonviolence.
